I attended the City of Sydney-hosted City Talk event at Angel Place last week with a client, and his intended aim of opening my eyes about the importance of being green in a changing world.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore had an outing, as did the Deputy Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, but it was all about the address of special guest, New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin.
Nagin was mayor when New Orleans was devastated first hand by climate change - when Cyclone Katrina belted the city and rocked its very foundations.
Nagin's story was inspirational, particularly his intent on spending extra to build New Orleans 'green' in the rebuilding effort. It felt as though he wanted to treat the environment fairly in the hope Mother Nature will return the favour when handing out natural disasters in future.
Of course, it is deeper than that. Clover Moore laid out her plans for a sustainable City of Sydney, referred to as Sydney 2030. Both mayors admitted most green decisions were not comfortable, nor are they vote- or support-winning politically. But they said it was necessary.
KayWeb - the company I own - will soon release details of how we are going green.
